An 1 hour Video conference to compare and contrast natural region disasters ( Texas, Oklahoma, New York) and how it changed the lives on fifth graders in the region)
This project was the result of another vc project that failed with Texas vc group. The group had 8 school districts around the USA, it was too much for the system, and it crashed. I volunteered to remove my local school from the system to help the success of the project. As the result of this the tech s from that project helped me to start my own project , which I ran , they did the bridging. The project included:
1. A fifth grade class from Aspermont Elenentary School ( who did a presentation on "Torrandos" and their "Underground High School" in Oklahoma.
2. A fifth grade class from Sabrina Pass, Texas. They presented "Hurricanes"
3. A fifth grade class ( mine) from Beaver Falls, NY. We presented ice storms, and lake effect snow storms.
As I stated above this project was created from the loss of another project that died out of tech difficulities. The tech s Tommy Beaden , and Jim Baxter set out my idea on a list serve. This project was picked up by ten schools. But because of the overbooking that caused tech difficulities on the last project I limited the projects to 3 locations. I PLAN TO DO THIS PROJECT NEXT SEPTEMBER, BRIDGING WITH FIVE SCHOOLS .
This connection was done with "IP" for the cost issue. I was surprised that video break up was very minimial.
Each school had several requirements to complete in their fifteen minute presentation:
1. Intro their school and describe the area they lived in.
2. Describe the characteristics of their " disaster"
3. Describe how they personally responded to this disaster ( physically and emotionally)
4. Describe what they learned from the distaster , and how they might respond differently the next time the distaster hit their community.
5. All presentations were asked to include a power point, or the use of an ELMO to add visual presence to their schools presentation.
The learners were expected to develop an appreciation of data drive problem solving when being exposed to a disaster emotionally and physically.
Using technology integration of other hardware and software, with video conferencing mobile equipment explain in a data drive personalized observations and reactions to a regional disaster to a "peer group of observers".
Each school was asked to to develop a group of post sessions about the other two schools presentations they observed. This acted as a post test assessment. The extension activities will include a scientific explaination of why each disaster took place ( based on the data from their science text they are using.) . A cultural exchange using e mail has been developed , but will not take place until 1/2/07.
My class developed a powerpoint , with animation , musical background, based on Internet research, and personel illustrations and photos . In addition student brought in objects that they used in ntheir survival story ( generator, skis , etc)
Time: It's probably best to keep this close to one class period. This process started 15 minutes before the actual presentation with the tech s checking each site with the bridge. The whole actual presentation ran 1 hour and 15 minutes to closure.
Responsibilities: WMy job as the moderator was to keep thing on tract in terms of agenda and time frame. My student s were totally responsible of the presentation ( running the VC equiptment, powerpoint and audio)
Credit: This project was based roughly on "Mystery Quest". By Steve Brooks.
This project was created as part of the Kid2Kid Videoconference Connections Online Class.
