Title~ Mind-bending Mania Game

Description~ This project is designed for fifth grade students. Through the use of VC technology students will participate in playing a question and answer game. Questions will be generated by my students from a variety of categories across all curricular areas and aligned to learning objectives determined by the state of Michigan content standards and benchmarks. Each class that participates will place students in groups of three. Upon hearing the question, each school will confer and select one answer among the group which will be written on paper. Points will be awarded for each correct answer. Points will be deducted for each incorrect answer. Questions will increase in difficulty and the points awarded will correlate with the difficulty level. A list of category questions will be sent to the participating schools two weeks ahead of time. This will allow them time to read, research, and prepare for the game, prior to the IVC. Examples of categories areMathematics~ Geometry; Social Studies~ Branches of Government; Language Arts~ Genre; Science~ Solar System

Time Frame~ Depends on the number of schools connecting and participating. Allow 60 to 75 minutes.

Register~ Via email to nthomas103@yahoo.com or call (269) 663-1063 ext. 4313. Please include the following information:

  • Name
  • School
  • District
  • Time Preference-!st and 2nd choice
  • Email or contact number

The host school and up to three classes may participate at one time. Selections will be made on a first come first serve basis.

Connection~ Made through BCISD

Learner Outcome~ Students will gain knowledge in all 5th grade Michigan contentareas as determined by category of questions in a fun interactive videoconference involving other students at a variety of locations.(The content area could be negotiated with other participating schools to better meet their curricular needs!)

Activity~ Host school students will research categories for information that is relevant. They will then draft questions and determine acceptable responses. These will be ranked according to difficulty level. A point amount will be assigned to each question.

Students will play Mind-bending Mania Game and compete against other schools. The school that is located the furthest distance away from the host school will have first choice of questions. An announcer will read the questions aloud. Each team of three students will confer about the question asked and record their one answer on paper. They will be given 20 seconds to determine their answer. When time is up, each group will show the response that they wrote on the paper. The correct answer will be given and points will be awarded accordingly. When ten questions have been given, three-person teams will switch, allowing all students an opportunity to participate in play. Teams will rotate in selecting categories and questions to try to keep it as fair as possible. Three scorekeepers from the host school, one assigned to keep score for each connected school, will keep a running total of each teams points. Play will conclude when all questions have been answered. Certificates will be sent to all the participating schools after VC is completed.

Material~ A list of categories will be sent to the participating schools two weeks prior to the IVC. Students will need access to reference materials or any other resource determined by the teacher where information and knowledge in the area can be gained. Students will need a journal in which to keep notes while researching takes place. During the game, students will need several copies of white paper and a black marker to record their responses on. A table will need to be set up at each location where the three-person teams may sit. A game set will be created by the host school, including a game board, a host/announcer podium, and a scoreboard. Students from host school will develop questions and determine levels of difficulty. Points will be awarded based on the difficulty level.

Teacher Role~ The role of the teacher is to oversee research and maintain a learning environment during the two week study period, prior to game time. Teachers should provide students with the categories along with many reference materials and resources where students can find and derive information. Teachers should also determine the three-person team, according to each student’s strengths and what they can contribute to the team as a whole. (Perhaps two three-person teams will focus on only one category, where they are the strongest.) It is also very important that teachers explain the ins and outs of an IVC. Students should know what to expect, where they are to sit or stand, and how to behave. During the actual game, teachers will facilitate and students will discuss and confer.
