As the culmination to a science unit, students use lego kits to create a tool that includes two simple machines and makes work easier to do. The students will present their tools and explain their uses. They will also walk through the process of making work easier, and how the simple machines can improve the amount of work being done.
From mid November through the end of the year
Contact teacher to set up a time. This project will be best presented on a one to one class basis, alllowing for questions and discussion of the projects.
We can connect to IP
I expect the learners to recieve a basic idea of what simple machines are for, and introduction, Or review, of the kinds of simple machines. This addresses both state and local curriulum benchmarks for the 8th grade science MEAP.
My students will present their projects to the other classroom, by explaing what their tool is, how it works, what simple machines are included, and how it makes work easier. Visiting classrooms will be able to ask questions and see close up pictures of the tools. Also, students could create intructions for thier tools, and send thsoe to the classrooms so students could create the tools they liked best.
What audio/visual aids, handouts, etc. will you use? We will need the simple machines, handouts of the directions and the VC equipment.
Time: 45-60 minutes
Responsibilities:
What will students do? Students will facilitate the majority of the discussion by expalining thier tool and presenting the information.
What will teachers do? Teachers will help students create presentations, keep people on task, and help generate appropriate questions.
Agenda: Who will do each part?
The visiting site will need to have slight background knowledge about simple machines, and help students generate questions before the VC.
Credit: The idea to create the lego simple machines is from the Battle Creek Math Science Center kit Science program.
