Experimenting With The Scientific Method
We plan to implement this point-to-point videoconference during the 2006-2007 school year, preferably during the Fall. Test connections for this program will be made during the week prior to the event. One to three weeks prior to the event, the classrooms at each site will be involved in the pre-videoconference activites (instruction in the Scientific Method, designing the experiments). The day of the videoconference, the experiments will be performed, the data analized and conclusions will be drawn.
We will connect via the BCISD Bridge (IP or ISDN depending on the sites involved).
As a result of these activities in grades 7 & 8, students will progress towards proficiency National Science Education Standard A: Scientific Inquiry and Standard G: Nature of Science.
Pre-Conference Activities:
Instruction on the Scientific Method, using common vocabulary
Students design and construct their experiments
Review proper behavior and etiquette during conference
Conference Activities:
Selected students will conduct experiments
Data will be collected and analyzed, and conclusions drawn
Q & A (if time permits)
Post-Conference Activities:
Assessment of the experiments and identification of variables
Constructed experiments (airplanes, bridges, acid-base cabbage), science textbooks, library books on science experiments, student and teacher science fair websites, graphic organizers for data collection, videoconferencing equipment
Time: One class period, approximately 50 minutes.
